In the race for the best cities to run in, Boise is just shy of the lead.

Runner's World conducted a research project ranking the best running cities in the U.S. for their October issue. The ranking considers running culture, parks, climate, food, and safety.

Overall, Boise ranked 20th on the list. At the top were San Francisco, Seattle, and Boston.

From the October issue:

The 25-mile Boise River Greenbelt is a scenic path shaded by trees and flanked by the water, but there is more: In the Boise Foothills, there are more than 190 miles of trails in the Ridge to Rivers System. And with at least 26 running clubs in the area, you’re likely to find a new running buddy to help you explore all the terrain the capital city has to offer.

The new Runner's World issue comes out Tuesday.
