The number of car thefts in Ada County in the past 30 days are staggering.

Why so many? More importantly, what can you do to protect yourself?

The Ada County Sheriff's office says there have been 25 unlocked car thefts since September 1st, and they're all happening where we live. The following areas have been hit the hardest so far:

  • Star
  • In Boise near Cloverdale
  • In Boise near Five Mile Road
  • Eagle
  • Kuna
  • Northern Ada County

So, pretty much anywhere in the Treasure Valley, cars are being targeted. Victims say they've had all kinds of valuables stolen including wallets, laptops, jewelry, purses, electronics, and more from inside their vehicles. Deputies report that thieves will walk by cars parked on the street and check if the doors are unlocked, and they'll also do the same to garage doors in an attempt to get inside your car or steal tools and equipment.

The best way to protect yourself from getting your goodies snatched from your vehicle? Make sure all doors are locked (and the locks are working properly), park inside your garage, do not keep valuables in your car, and if you have to park on the street try to park as close as possible to a light to deter criminals.

Any information about car burglaries should be reported to non-emergency dispatch at (208)377-6790.
