Chance The Rapper Gets Political During Surprise Emmy Performance [WATCH]

Last night (Sept. 17) during Stephen Colbert’s opening number at the Emmys, Chance The Rapper made a surprise appearance.

While his showing was comical, like Colbert, it was also laced with real issues– from police killings of black men to urging folks to join a protest and endorsing trans military service.

“I love television, it’s a pleasant distraction/ but imagine taking some action,” Chance rapped over a drum beat.

He then said that he loves the cop comedy Brooklyn 99, but “where’s the cop show where one gets convicted?”  At the end of his verse, he called on everyone to join a protest.

Beyond Chance’s appearance, last night was a chance for black people in television to shine, as Donald Glover became the first black director to ever win in the category and Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win for writing.

As for Chance, aside from his Emmy appearance and entertaining at his daughter’s birthday, Chance has been busy in the music realm, racking up five nominations for the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards this year. On the philanthropic front, Chance remains incredibly active. Earlier this month, it was announced that he’s donating $2.2 million to Chicago Public School through his non-profit organization, Social Works.
