Childish Gambino takes home another huge W. Actually, make that two W’s. On Sunday night (Sept. 17), hip-hop’s leading renaissance man, perhaps just as well-known now by his born name, Donald Glover, won trophies for both Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Atlanta) and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Atlanta) at the 2017 Emmy Awards.

The role that won Gambino the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor was that of AtlantaEarnest “Earn” Marks, an Atlanta-based Princeton dropout with dreams of making it in the music industry as a manager. In winning the trophy for his starring role in Atlanta, which is a show he created, Gambino beat out Aziz Ansari (Master of None), Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Zach Galifianakis (Baskets), William H. Macy (Shameless) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent).

Never predictable, Gambino gave some sarcastic props to one of the people hip-hop dislikes the most. “I want to thank Trump for making black people No. 1 on the most oppressed list,” Glover said during his speech. “He’s the reason I’m probably up here.” He also takes some time to thank his unborn son.

Gambino’s turn directing an Atlanta episode titled “B.A.N.” won him the Emmy for Outstanding Directing. By winning the trophy, he bested Jamie Babbit (Silicon Valley, “Intellectual Property”), Mike Judge (Silicon Valley, “Server Error”), Morgan Sackett (Veep, “Blurb”), David Mandel (Veep, “Groundbreaking”) and Dale Stern (Veep, “Justice”) and became the first Black person to win an Emmy in that category.

Upon winning his award for Outstanding Directing, Gambino made sure to thank his mentor, Hiro Murai. “This really belongs to Hiro Murai,” Gambino said, thanking the man who’s directed more than a few of his music videos in the past and many of the Atlanta episodes. “He had the eye for the show first, he’s really amazing. Thank you.”

Season two of Atlanta is on the way, though it’s been delayed until next year. In the meantime, Glover has been working on a Star Wars spinoff film.

Watch bits of Gambino’s acceptance speeches below and pray he’s serious about not retiring from music.
