Lauren's mom tells the story of why Lauren rides:

Lauren rides for her friend "Sarah".  She and Lauren met in about 2012 and became friends. She and her sister were being abused at home. They lived with their mother who had been in jail, etc. They got removed and were sent to live with their dad. He and his girlfriend who were no better. They continued to be abused, the girlfriend would spit on them… We would have both girls over for many weekends and I wished I could have done more. I spoke to the school, called child protective services, etc. They went in and out of foster care and then back to their mother.  One evening my phone rang and Sarah said “Can you please come get me right now?”. I was in the shower, but totally terrified for her, so threw clothes on and raced to her mom’s house to get her.  She stayed the weekend.  The girls were pulled from Mom’s house on Christmas Eve (2013, I think) and went to foster car and then last we heard had been moved across the country to a relative’s home. We have been unsuccessful in finding either of them and worry and miss them often…

We keep hoping one of them will pop up on social media somewhere, but don’t know if they changed their names or anything.  Sad… Lauren still cries about her friend. Ugh, all choked up typing…

Lauren, her sister and her mother have been cycling to break the cycle for years. After their ride at 3am today, it marks nine shifts or riding those bikes to power the radio station. They continue to come back and ride whenever we need them. They ask us to call them in the middle of the night if need be and they'll be there. It's no joke. They always follow through.
