It wasn't as bad as the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, but it was still really bad. Last night's performance by Mariah at the Billboard Music Awards showed that her tone-deaf performances aren't just a one-time deal. I have a theory, though.

First of all, let's go back in time to the performance where Mariah was supposed to show up for a sound check in order to ensure a flawless performance. It was Christmastime in New York. Mariah was several hours late. So late that the production crew wasn't willing to stick around and wait for her. So they didn't.

Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You... by musictrending
Okay, so, that's what happened this past December. Fast forward to last night at the Billboard Music Awards. Mariah sang a medley of songs which included her new song "Infinity" and one of her classics, "Vision of Love," - which we all know is an impossible song to sing unless you're Mariah.

Uhhhhh...the old Mariah.

Where IS the old Mariah?

Here's the extremely unimpressive performance from last night's Billboard Music Awards:

What happened? No, seriously...what happened?

I have a theory. We'll call it the Tawsha Theory (because everything needs a name).

Tawsha Theory: Mariah Carey

At one time, Mariah Carey was the greatest female singer. Sure, there was Whitney and talk was all about who was better but Mariah was the whole package. She seemed to have it together and could hit every single note known to man...and the music world.

There was little competition when it came to vocalists so being the best at what she did AND having everything at her fingertips turned Mariah into a massive diva. It was okay, though, because her talent backed it up. Who was going to say anything when her albums were selling themselves, her shows sold out and she was always on point?

Until Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera came along. The former Disney girls were getting all this attention much like Mariah and Whitney had. Britney couldn't come close to Mariah's talent but she was cute, she put on a hell of a show and she started dating Justin Timberlake. Then there was Christina. Christina could do what Mariah did and more. She was younger, she had confidence and she was part of the new group.

It's at this point where I believe Mariah lost it. She would have to put in some serious work in order to stay at the top of her game while Britney and Christina made it look effortless.

Then came the Hello Kitty themed bathroom and the over-the-top diva attitude (which I believe was a test to see if she still had the power to get what she wanted). In my opinion, Mariah didn't put in the time and effort to be better. She, instead, relied on her raw talent to stay on top.

Don't even get me started on Ariana Grande making her way to the scene SOUNDING LIKE MARIAH CAREY!! Oh snap!

My theory is this: Mariah isn't putting in the time while everyone else is doing only that - putting in the time.

Don't get me wrong, Mariah is one of the most talented vocalists almost ever. There's no reason she can't continue to be the queen.

Your turn. Thoughts?
