Somehow, we're sure it's our first grade teacher's fault that we could've actually owned one of the animals as a pet one day. As long as we live in the City of Trees, we most certainly can't.

Thanks for nothing, Mrs. Buchanan. Just kidding...sort of. My first grade teacher was actually quite brilliant. Rather than trusting care of a living class pet to a group of rowdy, questionably responsible six or seven year-olds she bought stuffed animals. First a koala named Fuzzy. Then a penguin, who's name I can't remember, but when I begged my parents to buy me the same one at Toys R Us, I named mine Adele. Was he actually an Adele penguin? Who knows.

Each student in the class got to take the stuffed animals home and journal about their weekend with them. After Fuzzy watched me play my soccer game in the rain, I was convinced that I would one day have a pet koala.

It's a dream that will probably never come true as long as I live in the City of Boise. Koalas are one of the many animals banned in captivity in Boise. Curious what else is on the list? It's quite extensive, but if you scroll down you can check out some of the highlights.

Now, some of the animals on this list you may have seen mentioned in our story earlier this week about the Idaho Reptile Zoo. Yes, you'll have the opportunity to see some of them there. Others at Zoo Boise. That's because there are exceptions for bonafide educational or medical institutions/museums who are licensed or permitted with the City of Boise, Idaho Department of Agriculture, U.S. Fish and Wildfire Service or U.S. Department of Agriculture.
