A plate of french fries can't be eaten in Idaho without fry sauce.

So where did it come from?

A lot of folks think that fry sauce originated in Idaho, since you can get it at pretty much any restaurant in the state. While there's no denying it's super popular here, we unfortunately aren't credited with creating the Pacific Northwest delicacy.

To discover the origins of fry sauce, we have to travel back in time to the 1950's. We also have to travel a bit south to Salt Lake City, Utah. There, a chef named Don Carlos Edwards created fry sauce in his restaurant Don Carlos' Barbeque by combining ketchup and mayonnaise. The rest is history and now fry sauce is arguably the most popular condiment in Idaho.

Did you know?

  • In Puerto Rico, it's called mayoketchup
  • In Argentina and Chile, it's called salsa golf
  • In Belgium, it's called cocktailsaus
  • In the Will Ferrell movie Stepbrothers, his character refers to fry sauce as "fancy sauce"

There you go. While fry sauce wasn't originally invented in Idaho, we've pretty much claimed the stuff as our own. Seriously, try finding a place to eat that doesn't offer it to you with your french fries.
