As I was trolling the big FB today, I came across a survey Buzzfeed put together about the way people in relationships use the "status" on social networking.  The results actually surprised me a little!

If you listen to our show, you know that the "nice guy" asked me to be his girlfriend by asking if he could update his Facebook status.  (I said no the first time he asked.) You also know that my most recent ex and I were together for the better part of a year without DTRing on the intrawebs.  If you looked at things and pictures we were tagged in, it was pretty damn obvious that we were together.  Our relationship was an "us" thing.  We didn't need to make it "Facebook official," have people like the update and congratulate us to make it meaningful.

As I've gotten older, having a "Facebook official" relationship means very little to me.  Plus, having to change it back to single if something goes awry is as painful as ripping off a band-aid.  When I'm hurting I don't want people liking my newly single status or trying to tell me everything is all right, there's bigger fish in the sea.

But what about the rest of America? According the Buzzfeed survey, 43% of people in relationships don't change their relationship statuses on Facebook because they find it cheesy.  A whopping 41% say they don't change their relationship status even if they are in a very serious, committed relationship.

For the people that do take the Facebook plunge, 38% of couples wait a few months and they've discussed changing their statuses on social media. Just 6% of people are as bold as "nice guy" and want to change things almost instantly.

So what about you Treasure Valley?  When do you or do you even make things FB official?
