Boise State Narrowly Escapes Utah With Win, Championship Hopes
They say a win is a win, but there was nothing pretty about the win that Boise State secured on the road against Utah State on Friday night.
The Broncos trailed for the bulk majority of the football game but several questionable calls and slip ups by the Utah State Aggies did everything but spoon feed a win to Boise State.
While up and within field goal range on one late-game fourth down, Utah State chose to 'go for it', only to be stopped by Boise State, turning over the ball with prime field position allowing Boise State to eventually take the lead.
Aggie fans have got to be angry about that call--a field goal there would have kept them ahead on the score board no matter what Boise State did next--and, they would have won the game.
In another questionable moment during the game, Utah State chose to go for a fourth down conversion--while ahead--instead of punting. Once again, they failed, offering up wonderful field position for the Broncos.
Sure, Boise State battled and won--but there's no arguing that Utah State was irresponsible in their game plan.
Further south, New Mexico led by former Vandal coach Jason Eck pulled off a major win against San Diego State. A loss for Boise State would have meant that the Mountain West Championship game would have been held in New Mexico--he's got to be bummed about this one!
Clear as mud?
It's up to the computers to decide who will play for a conference title--Boise State hasn't missed a title game since 2021.
