Idaho Facebook Helps Name Caldwell’s 3 Newest Police Drones
Times are a changing all around us. At school, in our professional lives, in just about every industry, and that is no different at local police departments.
As things change, local law enforcement offices need to also figure out new ways to police their communities, solve crimes, and be there for critical incidents and situations.
In Caldwell, that means getting some new technology: drones.
While most of us will never have to deal with these drones--at least, hopefully we won't--the police department wanted to 'introduce' them to the community in a fun way.
The call for help from the public went out on Caldwell Police Department's Facebook page:
The Caldwell Police Department is launching a new Drone as First Responder (DFR) program. This innovative tool helps us respond to emergencies faster, improve situational awareness, and enhance safety for our entire community. These drones aren’t just high-tech, they’re gamechangers. Our three new Skydio X10 drones will support search-and-rescue missions, disaster assessment, critical incidents, traffic collision mapping, and more. Equipped with high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging, and GPS, they’ll be able to reach most 911 calls in under two minutes, day or night, in nearly any weather. Now we just need one thing: NAMES!
It didn't take long for name suggestions to start flooding in!
All sorts of funny ones, like 'Peeping Tom' and familiar ones like 'Wall-E', flooded the comments, but one local suggestion stood out and it is officially official--the drones have names!
Caldwell Police loved the local twist on this creative response from local resident Jose Ruano!
- Coyote (to honor the College of Idaho Yotes)
- Cougar (to honor the Caldwell High School mascot)
- Cowboy (to honor the famed Caldwell Night Rodeo)
The names are local, creative, and perfect fits!
