Just two summer ago, folks in Boise were in for a magical visit. For the first time ever, an iconic and legendary locomotive would be visiting town courtesy of a cross-country tour provided by Union Pacific Railroad. As the highly anticipated arrival of this locomotive approached, however, the unfortunate news of a cancelation was announced.

The expected locomotive was a classic 4000-Class Steam Locomotive--they're MASSIVE and iconic!

It's tough to visualize just how massive these locomotives are--but you can get a sense of the monster, below:

Wouldn't it be neat to see this in person!?

After canceling on Boise two years ago, 'Big Boy' is on the way to Idaho.

According to Union Pacific Railroad, "Big Boy No. 4014" is retuning to the train tracks to celebrate 160 years of Union Pacific Railroad.

Stops include:

  • Elko Nevada
  • Montello, Nevada
  • Ogden, Utah
  • Soda Springs, Idaho (3:15pm - 3:30pm on July 22)
  • The train then continues on...

This locomotive is a real historic gem--it became an asset in 1941 and according to Union Pacific Railroad "helped carry the nation through World War II".

A total of 25 of these were ever assembled. The one visiting Idaho this month is the only functioning one remaining in the world.
