A terrifying image released by the Boise Police Department this morning is a stark reminder to local drivers that sometimes, no matter how safe you are being, there are other drivers that just aren't paying attention--or driving when they should be.

Over the weekend, some may have seen a crash involving a Boise Police vehicle--now, the department knows more about what happened.

The officer was hit by a drunk driver--and the driver was a minor. After further investigation, we've now learned that the driver was also using their cell phone. All of this, a concoction for disaster.

In a release by the Boise Police Department, the incident was explained:

Saturday night a driver who had been drinking before getting behind the wheel crashed into a Boise Police Officer as he drove through the intersection at 13th and Hays. An Ada County Sheriff’s Office investigation showed the driver ran a red light and hit the officer on the passenger side of the vehicle. Thankfully, the officer was able to go home that night without any major injuries. Evidence indicates the driver, who was under the age of 21, not only had been drinking but was also looking at his phone. Crashing into another driver, in this case an officer, is just one of the many dangerous and potentially deadly consequences that come from driving under the influence and distracted driving.

Each year, authorities remind us that summertime really encompasses the '100 Deadliest Days' on Idaho roads-- when more crashes and fatalities happen than the entire rest of the year.

It's important to remember that you can do everything right and still be at risk on the roads, because of other drivers. Take your time and pay close attention to the other vehicles on the road. Always buckle your seatbelt!

Not long ago, a driver on Interstate 84 captured a high-speed chase going through Boise that also included local law enforcement. Luckily, it ended safely...eventually.

Boise High Speed Chase Caught on Camera

On Sunday, April 10th, a high speed chase took place in the streets of Boise. The pursuit by Boise Police eventually ended near Bishop Kelly High School where more drama played out. Fantastic footage was captured by Vin Crosby, a well-known Boise meteorologist who said that during the chase, the suspect came within just feet of hitting him.
