Emotions ran high from start to finish of this hearing
Several family members spoke on behalf of the victims who were killed by Bryan Kohberger, the man who admitted to the quadruple homicide that shocked the world.
The two surviving roommates from the home in which these four were killed, also had statements. One read the statement herself, in person. The other had a written statement that was read by a friend.
Judge Steven Hippler was visibly emotional during the hearing, often reaching for tissues to wipe his eyes or nose.
Before sentencing Kohberger to consecutive life terms in prison, Judge Hippler thanks those involved in the legal process through this whole time--including counsel. He then did not hold back.
Hippler referred to Bryan Kohberger as a faceless coward, who slithered through the sliding door that night in Moscow, Idaho but now stands before the world and the court unmasked. Hippled called the acts 'unfathomable' and spent a significant amount of time sympathizing, in particular, with the parents of the victims noting that 'parents should never have to burry their children'.
Hippler's address to Kohberger came just seconds after Kohberger stood to say he would 'respectfully decline' the opportunity to speak at his own sentencing. Most were not shocked by the decision.
The judge then said it was time to end Kohberger's '15-minutes of fame' and have him forever removed from society.
Along with life sentences for each of the murders, seperate restitution fines of $50,000 and $5,000 respectively were applied to each of the murder counts, as well. Hippler also sentenced Kohberger to 10-years fixed and a fine of $50,000 for the burglary count.
