Urgent Security Warning Issued for Idaho Travelers Headed to Mexico
Shocking images have emerged from a handful of regions in Mexico.
News broke over the weekend that a prominent drug cartel leader had been killed by Mexican authorities--and since this development unfolded, drug cartels across multiple areas in Mexico ramped up criminal activity and attacks.
What is unique about this uprise is that these threats are taking place in areas that are normally very peaceful and very safe. Many are prominent areas for tourism.
The Department of State released an extensive and stark warning on social media platforms for United States citizens who are traveling to or are in Mexico:
In Puerto Vallarta, flights continue to be disrupted due to availability of flight crews. The Embassy is in close contact with airlines to monitor their plans. All other airports in Mexico are open, and most airports are operating normally. If you are traveling via any airport other than Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta, we have received no indication of any security-related flight disruptions. Check with your airline to confirm your flight status and schedule. U.S. citizens in specific locations in Mexico are urged to continue to shelter in place. U.S. government staff in Guadalajara (Jalisco), Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco/Nayarit), Ciudad Guzman (Jalisco), Tijuana (Baja California), Chiapas, and Michoacan are sheltering in place until all blockades are cleared, and we urge Americans to do the same.
We know several Idahoans that are in the 'shelter in place' areas now--and even more that frequent the area for vacation.
We spoke with one Boise resident who was supposed to fly into Puerto Vallarta this afternoon but canceled her plans.
"We were supposed to go to Puerto Vallarta this morning when the news hit yesterday. It gave us enough time to cancel. We are so grateful we weren't there when this started and are home safe and sound", she said, and continued "[we're] praying for the travelers stranded there and the people of Mexico..."
Certainly, the warning issued from the Department of State is for all Americans, not just Idahoans, but the destination is a very popular one this time of year for many in our area.
Officials suggest that the best place to get up to date and ACCURATE information on safety is at their official Embassy and Consulate page. Check that, HERE.
