Yes, Idaho Has Voted Democrat in a Presidential Election Before
While the ongoing joke yesterday was 'we can't wait until Election Day is over'--there is no denying that even with it behind us, you're still bound to hear about the election results. Whether you're at school, the workplace, or at the grocery store you're sure to see, read, or be met with a remark about one political candidate or another.
Here in Idaho, there's no denying--it's most often Republican.
Historically, Idaho has always been a Republican leaning state and where there are cities or counties that may be more mixed--the Republican party has never had to worry about securing Idaho's electoral votes.
Or...have they?
One of Idaho's most beloved Governors was actually a Democrat-- Cecil D. Andrus! At some point in Idaho, the entire state 'went blue' -- unheard of, right?
During that time, under a Democrat for Governor here in Idaho, the state voted Republican for President five times!
Has Idaho ever given its 4 electoral votes to a Democrat? Believe it or not, the Gem State has.
It's been a while, though--looking all of the way back to the year 1964!
The Presidential race that year was between Lyndon B. Johnson (a Democrat) and Barry Goldwater (a Republican). Idaho favored the democrat--but only by about 5,000 votes which was 50.92 percent of the vote.
The narrow victory in Idaho resonated with the landslide victory for Johnson, nationwide. Only 6 states voted Republican--Texas was not one of them--and Johnson just so happened to be a Democrat from Texas.
My, how times have changed.
This election cycle is in the bag and Idaho voted very, very red. But, as history has shown, that is never a guarantee.
Be civil to one another today.
