Beware Of The Boise River This Week

Floating the river is a Boise tradition. A Boise tradition that I have yet to take part in. I've lived in Boise a total of 5 years and for whatever reason I've never gotten around to doing it. A few months ago I put together a summer 2021 bucket list, not knowing if the pandemic would still be still ruling our lives I was determined to make these things happen and floating the river was one of those things. Today when I saw that the flow on the Boise river more than doubled I got super excited and started to make plans in my head, then I calmed down and did some research. Here's what I found:

According to CBS 2 "The Bureau of Reclamation is letting more water out from Lucky Peak Dam, to provide more water for salmon migration in the lower Snake and Columbia Rivers." This past weekend if you were on the green belt or you were at the river you witnessed the river flowing at 700 cubic feet per second but as of yesterday the levels are closer to 1900 cubic feet per second.

"With the weather getting warmer, and people wanting to be outside, they want to recreate on the Boise River, just to be cautious that the river looks different now than it did over the weekend," said Christine Schuldheisz, Bureau of Reclamation public affairs specialist in a CBS 2 interview.

Float the Boise River

"With the Boise River cranked up to 1,800 cfs today and cooler temps in the forecast, now is NOT a good time to float the Boise River. Please check back in a few weeks when we'll begin posting regular updates on Barber Park and the official 2021 Boise River Float Season!"

The issue is that the river is still very cold and flowing way too fast but come mid June we will get a green light to float the river and I will be able to cross that off my list.
