Because we live in Boise, we are supposed to support Kellen Moore regardless of whether he actually deserves our support. Today, I'm going to break that rule. I'm still appreciative that he won a Fiesta Bowl and did some amazing things as a Boise State Bronco, but he's no longer the quarterback of our team. He's an NFL coach, and if we're going to talk honestly about Kellen Moore as a potential head coach, then let's judge him solely on the job he's done in his role as a coach, more specifically as an offensive coordinator, not as a quarterback.

Kellen Moore is currently the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles are in the playoffs and will take on the Green Bay Packers on Sunday after winning the NFC East and owning the number three seed in the NFC Playoffs. They rank 8th in Total Offense. They are fourth from last in the NFC in Passing Yards. The three worse teams (Patriots, Bears, and Panthers) have all fired their coaching staff. However, Kellen's Eagles are second in Rushing Yards, but that is entirely because of the acquisition of Saquon Barkley, a running back who would have been a league leader on any team, regardless of the coach.

Kellen's job in Philadelphia was to make something of Jalen Hurts, the Eagles quarterback. While Hurts has had the best quarterback rating of his career this season, he also threw the ball almost 200 times less than he did last season and for nearly 1,000 yards less than last season. Hurts was also sacked more times than any other time in his career, even though he played two fewer games. Anyone who thinks that Kellen Moore has improved the Eagles offense in 2024 is kidding themselves.

After being fired by the Dallas Cowboys at the end of the 2022 season, he went to the Los Angeles Chargers, where his tenure was underwhelming and short. He could not create a system that fit the talents of their roster. The Chargers finished 24th in Total Offense, along with several late-game meltdowns and a severe lack of creativity in play calling.

The most successful times in his career were when he served as the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys under offensive-minded head coaches who kept him reeled in. Without those guardrails, he is left to his own devices and becomes the ineffective coach we saw in Los Angeles, who gets too conservative and predictable in big moments.

Kellen Moore was a great college quarterback. He is an average NFL offensive coordinator. Most importantly, Moore is not ready to be a head coach in the NFL. One day, he will be, but any team that takes a chance on him now will be looking for his replacement within two seasons. Only one word can honestly describe Kellen Moore's NFL coaching career: inconsistent.
