Parks And Rec Employing Boise Homeless
I came across this story today and instantly thought to myself, THIS is one example of how our city is so unique-- in the absolute best way possible.
What began as a trial program in the spring as turned into a great success. The Interfaith Sanctuary in Boise teams up with the city to help some of the most vulnerable members of our community--the homeless. With that goal in mind, Boise Parks and Recreation began to hire, seasonally, homeless individuals from Interfaith Sanctuary in hopes that there would be a transition-- from homelessness, to stability.
Interfaith Sanctuary has gone above and beyond to help make this a successful program as well, and so far everyone is happy about the results. With 7 guests employed by Boise Parks and Rec, the shelter assigned a case manager for each employee and assisted in setting up checking accounts with financial guidance on how to save and get the most out of their hard earned money. The employees are making $9.25/hour and Boise Parks and Rec has began to hire more sanctuary guests as results continue to be positive. Now, some of the guests are either no longer guests, own a car, or have taken significant steps toward rehabilitation and counseling.
This is such a unique and heart warming story. If you would like to read more about the program, you can do so by clicking HERE.
