What Happened to This Nearly 20-Carat Diamond Found in Idaho?
One of the best things about this job is having the freedom to explore and brainstorm our own ideas for these articles you read. Recently, I was curious to learn if you could mine diamonds in Idaho (spoiler: you won’t have much luck) and while I mostly hit a dead end when it came to actually mine diamonds, I did stumble across this peculiar story about one of the largest diamonds ever found in the United States… in Idaho.
A Huge Find
According to the Digital Atlas of Idaho, the largest diamond ever found in the United States weighed in at 19 ½ carats and was found between New Meadows and McCall. How much is that worth? Diamond101.com says a diamond that’s around 20 carats can fetch anywhere from $2.5 million all the way up to $5 million. Here’s the issue though… it seems that no one has a photo of it and no one knows where it is. That’s a HUGE diamond to lose track of, don’t you think?
What information do we have on the diamond?
It doesn’t even feel good to say considering this diamond is worth a fortune, but we don’t know much about it. According to one article, the diamond is known as the “Rock Flat Diamond” and comes from the areas between McCall and New Meadows. Interestingly enough, there was a mining claim for sale that we found through PicClick.com located near Goose Creek in Idaho. This seller mentions the nearly 20-carat diamond being found in the area.
Beyond that? We don’t have much information. Where could it have gone?
Theories About the Diamond
While we’re not sure of the location, one thing is for sure: a diamond is forever. It has to be somewhere; it didn’t just vanish… right? It’s a shame there’s no photo of the diamond but with as many accounts and reports there are of it existing, it has to be in someone’s possession whether in the United States or somewhere else.
Could it have been passed down by the original owners? Is it still in the state of Idaho?
If I had to toss any theories out, I would say that perhaps it was first thought to be a diamond that weighs 19.5 carats until testing took place. It was then that experts probably determined that the diamond was something else and that may have been too embarrassing to share with the rest of the world. Again – just a theory, by no means do I know what really happened. No one really knows unless we get incredibly lucky and the owner or someone who knows the owner reads this, resulting in them magically reaching out here to share the story behind the diamond.
Hey, we can "hope", right?
