It isn’t rare to play basketball for your dad growing up in elementary school, maybe junior high. Can you imagine playing for a parent at the Division I collegiate level? It’s happening and Bishop Kelly Basketball standout Max Rice is set to play for Boise State University under his dad, Head Coach Leon Rice.

I’ve got a soft spot for both of these guys and we’ve never even met. Coach Rice came to Boise State—and has had an extremely successful run—from Gonzaga University, my alma mater. His son, Max, is a graduate of Bishop Kelly, also my alma mater.

Being Max’s dad doesn’t mean Coach Rice can break any rules, however. He isn’t allowed to comment on Max’s, or anyone’s commitment until the November signing period.

After discussions with his dad, and now coach, Max says he’ll be passing up any scholarships and taking a walk-on spot, to make sure the 2018-2019 class will have an extra scholarship for another incoming player.

While he won’t be on the court in the 2018 season, I think the entire Treasure Valley and any Boise State fan has plenty of reason to be excited for what we’ll seen see on the court in Taco Bell Arena with this father-son basketball duo.
