If you're someone who's feeling extra grumpy today because it's Valentine's Day and you don't have someone special to spend it with, LITE-FM has a challenge for you.

If you're unattached this Valentine's Day, it's easy to be bitter.  It's easy to mock Valentine's Day as "Singles Awareness Day." It's easy to grumble every time you see flowers on a co-workers desk.  I'm not judging you for being anti-Valentine's Day.  Before dating my husband, I was you. I get it.

One year, a friend pulled me aside and gave me some tough love.  He pointed out that my self loathing and pity party was awfully selfish.  While it was true that I didn't have anyone special to spend Valentine's Day with, my life was far from awful. I had a great group of friends, no problems paying my bills and running vehicle that got me to and from everywhere I wanted to be. His challenge for me was to turn off the negativity on Valentine's Day and spread miles to people who really were going through some tough stuff on February 14. He had arranged for us to do a day of volunteer work that took us to visit families staying at the Ronald McDonald House while their children were being treated at St. Luke's, to serve lunch at the Boise Rescue Mission and to visit with an elderly listener who had lost his eyesight. It was hands down THE most rewarding Valentine's Day of my life.

So, if you're cranky today...I'm going to issue you the same challenge.  Given, you can't drop everything and go do a ton of volunteer work because opportunities similar to the ones we had have to be set up weeks to days ahead of time...but there is a little something you can do to help spread smiles to those in need here in the Treasure Valley and it's as simple as getting a cup of coffee!

Today, Dutch Bros is celebrating "Dutch Luv Day" where $1 of every purchase made in the Treasure Valley will go to benefit the less fortunate.  Boise, Nampa and Caldwell locations will donate their proceeds with Boise Rescue Mission Ministries.  The Meridian Dutch Bros. stands will forward their proceeds on to the Meridian Food Bank, where every $1 is turned into three healthy meals for those who can't afford to feed themselves and their families.

See, Valentine's Day isn't all bad! Enjoy your favorite Dutch drink and know that you made a difference in someone's life today.
