According to the Ice Dam Guys, you can create an "ice dam melter" at home. They give the DIY version.
Get a pair of tights or pantyhose. Let's be real, if you have pantyhose, they haven't been worn probably ever. Grab them and put calcium chloride in a leg. Tie a knot at each end and lay the pantyhose across an ice dam.
