Before we dive in, we'd like to be crystal clear about this:

It's still illegal in Idaho to possess, smoke, sell, or distribute marijuana. Or weed. Or that sticky icky. Or dank. Or Mary Jane's wacky tobacky. Doesn't matter what you call it. It's still illegal.

That being said...

What's going on?

The Idaho House (and then) the Idaho Senate have passed a bill that would implement a minimum fine for simple marijuana possession. That means if you're caught with cannabis on your person, no matter what you're doing with it or how it's discovered, you're busted, and you're going to be out of some money.

How much money are we talking here?

The proposed bill would set in a place a minimum fine of $300 for any Idahoan who's found to be in possession of that good green. Not everyone agrees, with opponents saying it's unfair since it removes discretion that judges and prosecutors are supposed to use in cases.

Will it actually happen? What's next?

If Idaho Governor Brad Little signs the bill, it would then be passed into law. Meaning, you'd better have $300 in cash on hand if you plan to stroll around Idaho with a pocket full of grass.

Believe if or not, Republicans tried a similar tactic in Idaho last year, only that bill proposed a minimum fine of $420 for a cannabis offense.

Tee hee. 420. I get it.
