Summer is creeping up on us, which means warmer weather, more time spent outside, and hopefully getting a little exercise.

But exactly how much exercise do Idahoans require compared to other states? In other words, how healthy are we here?

How does Idaho's obesity rate compare to other states in the U.S.?

Well, the good news is, we didn't do terrible. However, we also didn't do great.

In Idaho, the obesity rates amongst adults is 31%. Meaning, yes, about 1 in 3 adults in Idaho would be categorized as obese.

That puts us as the 29th-healthiest state, when ranked by obesity.

What's up with Colorado?

Somehow, the people in Colorado continuously find ways to stay extremely fit. Colorado's obesity rate is a rather low 24.9%, which puts them significantly higher than Idaho on the fitness scale.

I want to get in better shape. What can I do?

While this writer is absolutely not a fitness expert, here's a few tried and true methods that seem to work (for most folks) time after time:

  • Move around more! Household chores, mall walks, playing outside. Anything to get your heart rate up.
  • Cut back on alcohol. You wouldn't believe how many calories you're drinking after a night out.
  • Drink more water. It's good for you.
  • Give yourself grace. We're all on different journeys, and it's unfair to compare your progress to anyone else's. You're doing you, and you're doing amazing, sweetie!
