What is ‘Revenge Porn’ and Why Is It Happening in Idaho?
In the last week or so, a couple of arrests for felonies that we don't often see, have been made in the Treasure Valley.
They both have to do with 'video voyeurism' and neither of the cases are related.
Here in the Treasure Valley, we're lucky to live in a place where we are, for the most part, relatively safe. There is little crime, we look out for our neighbors regularly, and our law enforcement is constantly working to improve our safety. Sometimes, however, it isn't the stranger down the street that is the biggest threat to our safety but rather those that are closest to us. It's an unfortunate situation to find yourself in.
In one arrest, an Idaho man was arrested for posting nude photos of a former intimate partner online. In the second arrest, an Idaho man was booked on the felony for allegedly sending sexually explicit photos of someone to folks they weren't intended for--without the victim's permission.
Both of these arrests were made amid an increase in 'video voyeurism' crackdowns happening here in Idaho. What brought these to be? The rise of technology and a new concept: revenge porn.
Sending, posting, and sharing nude or explicit photos of someone without their permission is a Felony in Idaho and the term 'revenge porn' stems from the act of people committing this crime in order to cause the victim distress or embarrassment. In a world where technology and particularly cameras are everywhere--these protections are crucial.
