See Treasure Valley Comic-Con Pack the House
Treasure Valley Comic-Con debuted live from the Nampa Civic Center this weekend and didn't disappoint. I met some of the biggest names in Japanese Anime with Todd Haberkorn to hundreds of Idahoans in the best Cosplay. Check out what you missed.
I've only heard about Comic-Con, but never attended one. We've sent winners to several conventions including Comic-Con to San Diego and a group of listeners to Hunger Games/Twilight events. This year's debut of Treasure Valley Comic-Con was awesome all the way around. I thought it was great to see so many cosplayers for an entire weekend.
Cosplay - A contraction of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character.
There were panels where celebrities would sit and take questions from the audience almost each hour. I helped with the Todd Bridges panel and watched Cruise & Box host Margo Kidder. Both of these celebrities were popular back in the 70's and 80's. Margot was best known for her role as Lois Lane in the original Superman and Todd for his big brother role in Diff'rent Strokes.
A fan asked Margo about the newest Superman versus the original and received massive applause for her answer. The former lover of Superman said the newest installments don't work because he didn't have a Darkside. Kidder went on to talk about how genuine and nice he was so these newer, edgy versions of Superman...it's not SUPERMAN. I was able to meet Skinny Pete (Charles Baker) from Breaking Bad who was extremely nice and Darth Vader brought the entire empire with 501st.
There was also some local celebs in the world of cosplay that maybe you didn't know lived here. Check out our girl, Alkali_layke
I would expect to see Treasure Valley Comic-Con become an annual event. It's important for more reasons than you might think. This gives people a reason to get out of their shell and be surrounded by people just like them. Alkali was serious when she mentioned literacy for kids reading comic books. I watched a mom shake her head in agreement that it helped their child with reading. Aron from Sykes said this meant so much to his development as a kid eclipsing his shyness. That's just another reason I'm all over it and more bummed I didn't bring by son on Saturday. Lennox is almost 3 years old and is infatuated with Star Wars and most recently, Spiderman.
I think everyone should dress up at least once a month and tap into that silly freedom that we've forgotten. One of my favorite quotes of the weekend,
Actors are just grown-ups that dress up and play make-believe for a living. - Charlie Baker (Skinny Pete/Breaking B
