My boyfriend and I spent the first day of Spring jumping from patio to patio for cocktails.  We couldn't help but overhearing the conversation of a man and woman beside us at 13th Street Pub.

First, let me say I do feel bad about eavesdropping as much as we did but we were fascinated. They talked about everything from business to fashion to eating clean to the movie The Big Short. My guy and I couldn't help but wonder if these two were on a date, were business associates or just friends.

Neither of them seemed to be real into what the other was saying.  If they were friends, it seems like they should've already known the things about each other that they were discussing.  She had a few glasses of wine.  He had a few Coronas.  They were both picking at their food as they talked.  We do know that the guy has gone through a divorce.

My guess was the two of them had met on an online dating site and this was one of their first face to face meetings.  It was driving us crazy so we posted about it on Facebook and here's how some of our friends thought we'd be able to tell:

Tony

If he looks like he's trying to touch her hand it's a date. If there are no rings they probably are married. With all the beer he is drinking its probably and office affair! They're out of town on business and getting drunk so they don't feel bad while they're cheating on their significant others.

Listen for use of the S-E-X word.

Jesse

He may be the gay bestie. Find a moment when he's not paying attention to her. If he's checking out guys, then he's the gay bestie. If he's checking out girls, they're probably on a date or just friends. If he checks out no one, they might be married.

How can you tell if someone's on a date or just friends with the person they're with?
