Women Winning TIME’s ‘People of the Year’
You really love to see it. Women are out here capitalizing on their power, strength and winning awards, more so now than ever before.
In addition to naming Greta Thunberg it 2019 Person of the Year, TIME has also anointed Lizzo its first-ever Entertainer of the Year and the U.S. women's national soccer team its first-ever Athlete of the Year.
"Suddenly I’m mainstream!” Lizzo laughs about her huge career after years of hustling. “Body positivity...was a form of protest for fat bodies and black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing. How could we have guessed something like this would happen when we’ve never seen anything like this before?”
As for the U.S. women's soccer team, star Megan Rapinoe tells the outlet, "People always wonder, how the hell do these women act the way they do? That’s the world we live in...There’s joy in realizing your power.”
Lizzo walked away with the most nominations for the 2020 Grammy Awards earlier this year, while the U.S. women's national soccer team racked up its record-setting fourth World Cup title.
No doubt about it, Greta Thunberg has had a huge and important role in the conversation around climate change, Lizzo has had a monumental year and the U.S. women's soccer team is doing things no other team has done in their sport. Go girls.
